Tosa Breed Information

This breed was developed in Japan, in the 14th century. They were mainly used for dog fighting. They are considered as a national treasure, by Japan. This breed is very hard to find out of its native place. Now this breed is used as family dogs, watch dogs and also as guard dogs. This breed is large in size and also very massive. They have large and broad head. Their muzzle is very long in appearance. Their teeth are set in scissor bite. Their ears are small and also hanging. Their neck is strong and also muscular. Their tail is long and thick, and is also tapering towards the end. Their feet are strongly padded to adjust with the hard terrines. The coat covering their body is short and also thick. They are available in black, tan, brindle and red combinations. This breed is loyal and also devoted towards their master. They are very protective, brave and also fearless. They should be trained by a firm and also strong willed trainer, or else they would be hard to train. They can be very aggressive towards strangers and also unfamiliar animals, hence they should be socialized, starting from an initial stage. They can be calm around children if they are properly trained, but it is not recommended tht, this breed should be left alone with kids, as thy might get aggressive if hurt. They are affectionate and also loving towards the family. They are perfect choice as guard dogs. They should be kept away from smaller household pets, or else they might get hurt. They are fighters and hence have a natural tendency to challenge other animals. The average height of a healthy Tosa is 60 cm and the average weight of this breed is 38 kg to 91 kg. As long as this breed is properly exercised they will be fine in an apartment. They are very energetic and also active; hence they should be taken out for daily walks and also off the leash run in the woods. This breed only requires the minimum grooming. They should be brushed and combed every day. The average life expectancy of Tosa is 10 years to 12 years.
