Skye terrier Breed Information

One among the oldest breed of terrier dogs known in the world, Skye terrier, was developed in the year 1600, in Skye Island. They were mainly used as farm dogs and also as hunters to hunt small games like fox and badger. This breed was recognized by American Kennel Club in the year 1887. This breed has a long body; to be precise; their body length is twice as their height. They have a long head with a tapering muzzle. Their teeth are either set in level bite, or in scissor bite. Their ears can be found both dropped and also erect. They have a long tail, covered with featherings. Their feet are large, and also hare like in shape. They have a double coat covering their body, with a hard outer coat and also a soft undercoat. They are available in various colours like silver, grey blue, fawn, and silver and also black. Skye terriers are calm and also good natured. They are caring and affectionate towards their master and also family. They are brave and fearless, and sometimes act very protective of the family and also the owner. They are not appropriate pets for first time dog owners. They should be trained by a firm, confident and also calm leader. They have a natural tendency to hunt or chase smaller animals, like squirrels and mice; hence they should never be let off the leash unless it is a safe area. They can be aggressive around strangers and in order to avoid this, they should be properly socialized from an initial stage. If they are not trained properly, there are chances for them to develop behavioural disorders. The average height and weight of a male Skye terrier is 25 cm to 30 cm, and 16 kg to 18 kg respectively. The average height and weight of a female Skye terrier is 24 cm to 25 cm and 11 kg to 14 kg, respectively. They are comfortable both in apartments and also yards, provided that they are given sufficient exercise. They should be taken out for daily walks and also jogs. They should be combed or brushed daily to avoid matting. They are generally very healthy breed. The average life span of Skye terrier is 12 years to 15 years.
