New Zealand Huntaway Breed Information

This breed was originally developed in New Zealand, in the year 1916. This breed was mostly used as herding dogs. This breed is not recognized by any of the kennel clubs and is also very rare to be found even in their native land. Now this breed is mainly being used as companion dogs. This breed is medium in size and is very compact. They are well built and also powerful. They are muscular in appearance. Their head is long and is in oval shape. They have a long muzzle and wide nostrils which helps this breed to become an excellent tracker. The have flat and long ears, which are low hung. They have very powerful jaw, and their teeth are met in scissor bite. The feet of this breed is strong and also round in shape. Their paws are hard padded. The coat covering the body of this breed is short and also smooth in appearance. They are deep chested. They are available in black and also tan combination. Unlike all other sheep dogs, this breed uses their voice to control the livestock. They are very loving and caring and they have a very peculiar voice. They get easily attached to the family. They are sweet tempered and always cheerful. They love the care and also the attention given to them by the family and their master. They are very loyal and also devoted to their master. This breed is very loud barkers. They can be aggressive towards strangers, and hence should be properly socialized in order to avoid such situations. This breed should be carefully trained by firm as well as calm trainers. If not properly trained, they might develop behavioural deficiencies like stubbornness, and dominancy. They might tend to become over protective at times. This breed can easily adjust in an apartment as long as they are properly exercised. They are working dogs and hence are very energetic and also active. If they are not properly exercised, they might get destructive. This breed s usually very healthy and the average life span of this breed is 12 years to 14 years.
