Flat Coated Retriever Breed Information

Flat coated retriever is also known as Retriever proper, and is a type of Labrador. This breed was developed in the year 1800. They have a flat and wavy coat, and are hence known as flat coated retriever. They were used by hunters and also fishermen. They were also used as bird dogs. They are good hunters and trackers. This breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in the year 1915. This breed is medium in size. They have long and flat skull, with a long muzzle. They have small ears, which are feathered and are also hanging. They have string feet and their legs are covered with featherings. Portions of their chest and also tail is covered with featherings. They are generally gentle and also calm in nature. They are very good with children and are playful when around them. They are smart and also loyal towards its master and the family. They should be trained by a call, as well as friendly owner. They are easy to train as they are very obedient in nature. They are easily bored and can easily get destructive when they are trained. The average height of a healthy Flat coated retriever is 57 cm to 59 cm, and the average weight of a healthy Flat coated retriever is 30 kg to 34 kg. They are not suitable for apartment life. They at least need a large yard to spend off their energy. They should not be left out in a kennel. They prefer to stay close with the family, so itís better that they live inside the house. They should be regularly taken out for walks and also jogs. They also love to swim and hunt for fun. They are easy to groom. They should be brushed or else combed regularly. If necessary they can also be trimmed. The major health condition affecting this breed is hip dysplasia. They are also prone to diseases like epilepsy, PRA, diabetes, and also CHD in some cases. They can also be affected by skin allergies, so they should be wiped with wet clothes to remove dirt from their coat. The average life expectancy of this breed is 10 years.
