English mastiff Dog Breed Information

English Mastiffs are very old breed, which was originally developed in Britain, before 3000 BC. They were used as body guards, companion dogs. At present they are also used as watch dogs, family dogs and also as weight pullers. They are very massive in size. Their head is large and square in shape. Their muzzle is medium in size. Their ears are small and are V in shape. Their teeth form scissor bite, and are perfectly packed. They have wide and long tail, which tapers at the end. They are available in different colours varying from, brindle, fawn, apricot, tiger brindle, silver and golden fawn.They are very powerful dogs, and are also calm and gentle in nature. They are very efficient guard dogs. They are very silent and they seldom bark. They are very alert and watchful. They are very friendly towards strangers, unless they are threatening to the owner or the family. They are very friendly towards children and enjoy their company very much. They possess high self-confidence, and donít require much training. They are droolers, and tend to drool and snort often; this behavioural issue can be avoided if they are properly trained. They need a calm and confident trainer, who do not dominate them or else they can be very hard to train. The average height and weight for a male English mastiff, is 75 cm and 73 kg respectively. In the case of female English mastiffs, the average weight and height is 70 cm and 69 kg respectively. The can easily live in an apartment given that they are provided with adequate exercise. They tend to get lazy easily, hence proper exercise must be provided to make them happy. Daily walks are recommended to stimulate them mentally as well as physically. They are short haired and are hence easier to groom. They should be brushed and combed daily in order to avoid skin infections. After daily walks their coat should be wiped with wet clean cloth to remove dirt. They should be shampooed at least once in every month. This breed is highly prone to hip dysplasia. They also have eating disorders so you should be strict with their diets. They are also prone to elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion, PRA, PPM, CHD, ectropion. The average life span of this breed is 10 years to 12 years.
