Cretan Hound Breed Information

This breed was originally developed in the Crete Island, which is a part of Greece. They are considered as one of the oldest breed of dogs in history. The main purpose of this breed was hunting. They are believed to have existed in this world, for about 4000 years. They are this breed is very athletic, great trackers and also perfect companion dogs. This breed has a long as well as slender body. Cretan hounds are medium in size; they are not too large and not too small. They have small and round feet, which makes them very swift. Their head is wedge shape and they have rather short muzzle, with wide nostrils, which makes them excellent trackers. Their teeth are set in scissor. Their ears are very peculiar, as they stand erect and are also folded backwards. This breed is very sensitive to even the smallest sound. The coat covering the body of this breed is tough and short. It is also smooth in texture. Cretan hound is available in brindle, brown grey, black and also sandy colour. Their tail is prominently curved. This breed is very good hunter, with an appreciable sense of smell. They have a very peculiar way catching the smell of the prey. They usually sense the smell of their prey from the soil or ground, sucking it from the pebbles and also stones. If properly trained, this breed can become quite a good house hold companion. They are very loving, affectionate, gentle and also caring. They love to spent time with family, and can also become a perfect companion for children. They are not loud barkers but barks when necessary, especially to alert its master. They are very loyal towards their master. They behave well with other household pets, but might be aggressive around other animals and also strangers. This breed should be properly socialized, from an early age. The average height and weight of a healthy male Cretan hound is 60 cm to 64 cm, and 20 kg to 30 kg. In the case of females, the average height and weight is 50 cm to56 cm and 18 kg to 25 kg respectively. They are perfect for apartments, but make sure that your Cretan hound is properly exercised. Being a working dog, exercise is very important for this breed, for their mental and also physical fitness. This breed is usually very healthy, but in certain cases, kidney disorders and bone diseases can be seen. The average life expectancy of a healthy Cretan hound is 13 years to 16 years.
