Basset hounds Breed Information

Basset hounds is believed to have descended from blood hounds. They were originally developed in France. In the earlier days, this breed was used as hunting dogs, and also as companion dogs. They were used to hut pheasants, fox and also hares. They have good reflexes and are also very good trackers. These dogs are short in size, but are very heavy. They have large and round head, with a deep muzzle. Their lips are pigmented with dark colour, and are also loose and hanging. The skin of these dogs is very elastic, and hangs in the form of folds. Their ears are very soft and also velvety to touch. The ears are long and hanging. Their teeth are large and forms scissor bite. They are deep chested. They have short, hard and dene coat covering their body. They are mostly available in white tan, black and red colours. They are well behaved and sweet dogs. They are extremely devoted and loyal towards their owner and family. Most of the time they are friendly. They never seem to be aggressive. They are friendly with the kids and enjoy spending time with them. They can be stubborn if the owner is not firm. They should be trained patiently and gently. Their sound is very deep and musical. This breed is usually calm inside the house, and outside they are very active. They will do fine in an apartment, but they must be taken out for daily walks and exercises. The average height and weight for male Basset hounds are, 32 cm to 38 cm, and 24kg to 30 kg respectively. In case of females, the average height and weight are 29 cm to 36 cm and 21 kg to 28 kg respectively. They should be regularly taken out for walks to keep them happy and active. They are very easy to groom. They should be brushed every day. Be sure that you trim their toe nails regularly. They should be shampooed once in every month. Be careful not to over feed this breed, if you do so they tend to develop eating disorders. A strict diet should be issued for your Basset hounds. The average life expectancy of this breed is 10 years to 12 years.
