American Staffordshire Terrier Dog Breed Information

This breed, American Staffordshire Terrier, was first developed in Staffordshire in England in the nineteenth century, and was later brought to America. They are very muscular and powerful breed, and were developed as fighters to perform in dog fighting. After the ban on dog fighting in America in 1900, these dogs were used as household per and companions. This breed belongs to the terrier group of dogs. These dogs are highly compactable but are very powerful when compared to its size. They are broad chested and are comparatively stockier, than the British breed of these dogs. They have strong jaws and high set ears, which are sometimes cropped after the birth, and in some places they are left uncropped. The teeth of this breed forms scissor bite. The coats covering the body of these dogs are very thick with glossy hair. They can be found either in solid colour or in patch colour. The tail of this breed is usually docked, and if not they are long, and tapering towards the end. These dogs are very intelligent and alert. They are often very calm and confident breed. They can be slightly outgoing sometimes. American Staffordshire terriers are generally very gentle as well as loving towards humans. They are a very good choice for a family pet, as they are very loving and loyal towards their owners as well as families. They are very keen to please their owner, and are hence easy to train. They are very courageous and also absolutely fearless, and can play the role of a good guard dog. If the owner or the family is threatened is can get very aggressive. They are very calm and playful around children and gets very protective around them. They can be furious around strangers hence they should be properly socialized. They are not recommended for inexperienced owners. The average height for a healthy male American Staffordshire terrier is 45 cm to 49 cm, and for females it is 42 cm to 46 cm and the average weight of this dog is about, 58 pounds to 70 pounds. The average life span of a healthy American Staffordshire terrier is 9 years to 15 years.
